Neck Pain, Stress & Posture

Causes for neck pain include repetitive movements, stress, accidents or trauma, and posture to name a
few. These activities lead to damage of the muscles, ligaments and joints and discs of the cervical spine,
leading to pain in the neck and arm, frequently with numbness and weakness in the hands. Neck pain
can affect virtually every aspect of your life because if you can’t move your head or neck, it is difficult to
do any activity. As a chiropractor, Dr. Staley is uniquely qualified to determine what structures are being
injured and to modify those causes to prevent further damage.

Cervical Disc Injury – If vertebrae are misaligned, it will begin the process of wearing out the discs
prematurely. Left untreated, this will lead to a narrowing of the disc space and a bulging of the disc.
Fibers of the bulging disc can rupture spilling their contents onto the nerves and spinal cord, creating
severe, intense pain that can radiate to the shoulder or arm and cause hand numbness and weakness.
Ignoring these symptoms can lead to cervical disc herniation that protrudes into the spinal canal
compressing the nerves, spinal cord, or both. Given how small the area is inside the cervical spinal canal,
this can lead to such symptoms as acute pain and spasm with radiating pain to the shoulder, arm, hands
and fingers. There is often numbness, tingling and decreased strength or the shoulder, arm or hand. As
a chiropractor, Dr. Staley will determine what structures are involved and correct the situation. If you
have any of these symptoms contact the Family Chiropractic Center today to begin your relief.

Stress and posture – The vast majority of Americans earn their living while sitting in front of a computer
screen for 8 or more hours a day and then using the computer recreationally in the evenings. This
constant sitting leads to poor posture. Poor posture creates increased degeneration of the joints and
discs of the neck. Some muscles will become shortened while others are stretched out. All of these
changes can lead to headaches, neck pain and arm pain and numbness and tingling in the hands and
fingers. In severe cases, patients can experience weakness. If you add work stress, stress to the system
through poor diet, and no stress relief due to limited exercise it could lead to a very unhealthy situation.
Dr. Staley is passionate about addressing life’s stressors and improving posture leading to better health,
sleep, increased energy and a better life. Contact the Family Chiropractic Center to see how Dr. Staley
